Parent Notes

October 9, 2015

Dear Parents,

We had a good week in class. In language arts, we focused on the letter a, and the short vowel sound that it makes. We also read a new book called I Have! , which introduced the sight words have and is. We will practice reading and writing these words over the next two weeks. This week we also began a unit talking about plants and animals. As part of the unit, the children listened to a story about flowers, and were asked to recall details from the book. They also had a chance to make a flower picture, and write a sentence about flowers. The children also went out to the garden, and planted some winter vegetables. In math we started working on the numbers through 10. The children played several games in class to reinforce these numbers. We will be working on these numbers for the next few weeks. On Wednesday, we also started a new art program called Arts Attack. The children learned about line drawing, and used what they learned to create some great caterpillars. We will be having Arts Attack lessons every other Wednesday throughout the year. The homework for this week is practice with the numbers 1- 10, and finding numbers around the house. Please also take time to reread the little books that have come home.

I want to give you three quick reminders. Next Monday, October 16 is our first Math and Munchies of the year. This is a time for parents to come into class and join us with our learning, and then spend the lunch time with their children. Everyone is invited to come on that day from 11:15 to 12:30. We will be spending time playing math games. Parent/Teacher conferences begin next Monday, October 12. The conference schedule will remain posted at the door as a reminder. I’m looking forward to meeting with all of you. Finally, Friday, October 30, will be another school wide minimum day for staff training. All the children will come from 8:30 to 12:30 on that day

Thanks again,

Steve Madson
