Room 15 News
Hello!
We are all citizens of one beautiful planet and we celebrated Earth Day all week with activities, stories, art and writing. Children painted earths and wrote one way in which they could help the earth. We made Woodsy the Owl and wrote his slogan “Give a hoot, don’t pollute”. We read The Lorax by Dr. Suess and discussed cause and effect. What happened to the water and the sky and the trees? What caused those problems? What can we learn from the Onceler’s mistakes?
Our big question this week in language arts was “What kind of work do trains do?” We read the classic story The Little Engine That Could. Students created their own trains and wrote something they had to work hard to achieve. We focused on nouns. After watching a video of The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, students created their own little old ladies and drew nouns for her to swallow. We continued to work on the short u sound and the sight words said, was and what.
We had lots of fun with addition this week. We used unifix cubes to help us figure out addition problems. We played the math game Bump. We also worked on subtraction.
I attended a math workshop on Thursday and our guest teacher was Lynn Boerio. Lynn taught at Lu Sutton for over twenty years and recently retired. She left a glowing note about our class. We really have a great mix of characters in Room 15!
In science, we have observed tadpoles and goldfish. Next we will observe snails. If you have any snails you would like to donate, please bring them on Monday. I will have a container set up.
Our Lu Sutton International Day is on Friday at 5:00 p.m. Kindergarten created a beautiful welcome sign for the event. International Day is a wonderful event.
Have a great weekend!
